Rio Vista voters have rejected a measure to significantly lower monthly rates for residential water and sewer services in the city.
With all precincts reporting, 55 percent of voters rejected Measure A in Tuesday's special election, according to election results posted on the Solano County website.
The measure would have reduced combined water and sewer rates, which have spiked in the city of 7,400 residents in recent years, to about $65 a month starting July 1.
Right now, customers in one of the city's two sewer systems pay about $97 a month for water and sewer services, while customers in the other pay about $132 a month.
A few years ago, combined water and sewer rates in the city were $52 a month. City property owners approved the current rates, effective in 2009.
In rejecting Measure A, voters effectively chose to continue paying the higher rates to ensure adequate utility services.
City officials reported that, had the measure passed, the city might have faced financial problems attempting to maintain those services.
Loetta Papetti, president of the Rio Vista chapter of the Solano County Taxpayers Association, circulated the petition that put the initiative before voters.
About 45 percent of the city's 4,851 registered voters submitted ballots, most of them by mail, according to the Solano County website.
