An agreement with Los Angeles Unified to bring back 325 laid-off office clerks and library aides was ratified by the union representing support staff, officials said Tuesday.

The California School Employees Association overwhelmingly approved the deal that restores the jobs, but requires workers to take four unpaid furlough days from January to June, officials said. The school board approved the contract last week.

That means 79 full-time financial managers and 60 full-time office technicians will be recalled, along with 98 part-time library aides and 63 part-time office technicians.

In addition, 25 employees will be rehired as financial managers, according to the district. However, the CSEA disputes some of the figures, saying there are more librarians being added, not financial managers.
Employees are expected to return to their jobs in mid-November.

"I am very pleased that our members overwhelmingly approved both of these agreements to restore jobs and to bring many of our members back to work," said union President Espie Medellin said.

The LAUSD laid off more than 1,100 workers in September in what was called a cost-cutting move. The laid-off workers included 450 office clerks and technicians and 230 library aides.

"This agreement returns vital staff to many of our campuses," Superintendent John Deasy said in a statement. "I applaud CSEA and its members for taking this step.

"At a time of crippling budget cuts, restoring these positions is especially welcome news for principals, teachers, and parents."
