The Sacramento Police Department reported late Tuesday it has received a federal grant exemption that will allow it to retain 35 officers that were slated to be laid off.
As part of a plan to address a projected $39 million deficit for the fiscal year beginning July 1, the City Council voted last week to lay off more than 80 police officers. Of those officers, 35 are funded through a federal grant that the city would have lost by issuing the layoffs.

The city applied last week for an exemption to regain the federal funding. According to a Police Department news release, the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services has approved the exemption, which will restore the funding and allow the city to keep those 35 officers.

The officers will be assigned to downtown patrols and some traffic teams.

In a written statement, Sacramento Police Chief Rick Braziel called the exemption a "positive in an otherwise difficult budget year."
